An Internship at the Center for Special Dentistry.

This past summer I not only had the opportunity, but the privilege to be part of the team of The Center for Special Dentistry in New York. I am a fifth year dental school student in Ecuador, and this internship was one of the best experiences of my career so far. In The Center for Special Dentistry you feel as part of a group, everyone matters : doctors, assistants, hygienists and interns.

Being able to observe how one of the best dental clinics in the best city in the world works was a once in a life time opportunity. If I could do my internship anywhere else I would do it there again, and hope I can go back if I have the chance.

Dr. Dorfman is the head of the clinic, is incredible to watch him be part of all patients diagnostics by working together with orthodontists, periodontists, root canal specialists, and even sleep apnea specialists all to give the patients the best treatment possible. I was amazed by how on top of things he is at all times and this leaves little room for error. even as an intern he is sure you are always learning things and watching new and different procedures so your experience is as rich as possible.

Being that he was a professor for so long he is a great doctor to learn from, he not only explains everything thoroughly, but makes sure you understand by making key questions along the way (some times very tricky ones). I learned how materials we have no opportunity to acquire in my country work and how they might be able to help me towards giving patients the best treatment possible. I also learned how to do complicated procedures that are game changers in the future of a patient’s dental treatment plan (looked extremely easy preformed by Dr. Dorfman, extremely hard to for the first time, I’ve tried!).

As I came home for my last year and had my first patient of the semester I was eager to apply everything  I had learned with Dr. Dorfman and the rest of specialists. The way I treated patients changed drastically, I became more involved with the patients lives and feelings towards the treatment. My treatment plan became more global, so the patient would leave my hands with a functional and esthetic simile.

It is not an easy place to work, but if you don’t challenge your self you won’t get anywhere. The cases are complicated, the patients are demanding, the hours are long and in the end it’s still all worth it when you see the end results. Patients that go to the specialists there wouldn’t switch dentists for anything, I saw it first hand. If you are seeking for an internship this is the place to apply, if you are a professional dentist this is the place you’d want to work in, and if you are a patient this is the place you’d want to be treated.

Una pasantía en The Center for Special Dentistry.

            El verano pasado no sólo tuve la oportunidad, pero el privilegio de ser parte del equipo de The Center for Special Dentistry en Nueva York. Soy un estudiante de quinto año de odontología en Ecuador, y esta pasantía fue una de las mejores experiencias de mi carrera hasta el momento. En The Center for Special Dentistry uno se siente como parte de un grupo, todos los que están ahi importan: doctores, ayudantes, higienistas y pasantes. Ser capaz de observar como una de las mejores clínicas dentales en la mejor ciudad del mundo  funciona fue una oportunidad única. Si yo pudiera hacer mi pasantía de nuevo la haría en el mismo lugar otra vez, espero poder volver si tengo la oportunidad.

            Dr. Dorfman es el jefe de la clínica, es increíble ver como  él es parte de todos los diagnósticos de los pacientes mediante el trabajo conjunto con los ortodoncistas, periodoncistas, especialistas en endodoncia, e incluso especialistas de apnea de sueño, todo para dar a los pacientes el mejor tratamiento posible. Me quedé sorprendida por la forma que el  logra estar encima de todo en todo momento y esto deja poco margen para error. Incluso como pasante El esta pendiente de que estés aprendiendo cosas y viendo procedimientos nuevos y diferentes para que tu experiencia sea lo más rica posible.

Dado que él fue profesor universitario durante tanto tiempo lo hace un gran médico para enseñar, no sólo explica todo con todo detalladamente, pero se asegura de que tu entiendas al hacer preguntas clave en el proceso (algunas veces los muy difíciles). Aprendí cómo manejar  los materiales que no tenemos oportunidad de adquirir en mi país y cómo podríamos usarlos parar  ayudar  a los pacientes con el  mejor tratamiento posible. También aprendí cómo hacer procedimientos complicados que son importantes en el futuro del plan de tratamiento dental de un paciente (parecen muy fácil cuando los hace el Dr. Dorfman, pero extremadamente difíciles, cuando los haces por primera vez, lo he intentado!).

Una vez empezado mi último año, tuve mi primer paciente del semestre y estaba ansiosa de aplicar todo lo que aprendí con el Dr. Dorfman y el resto de especialistas. La forma en que trato a los pacientes cambió drásticamente, me volví más involucrada con las vida de los pacientes y sentimientos hacia el tratamiento. Mi plan de tratamiento se hizo más global, por lo que el paciente dejaría mis manos con una sonrisa no solo funcional  pero también estética.

No es un lugar fácil donde trabajar, pero si uno no pone retos no llega a ninguna parte. Los casos son complicados, los pacientes son exigentes, las horas son largas pero, al final todo vale la pena cuando ves los resultados. Los pacientes que acuden donde los especialistas  no cambiarían a sus dentistas por nada. Si estás buscando para  hacer una pasantía este es el lugar  perfecto para aplicar, si eres un dentista profesional este es el lugar donde te gustaría trabajar, y si eres un paciente  este es el lugar donde te gustaría ser tratado.
